A play park for the Children's Hospital in Columbia

The project

When MU Health Care built its new children's hospital in Columbia, the courtyard needed somewhere patients and siblings could play outdoors, accessible from a wheelchair and visible from the building. ATHCO supplied the Landscape Structures play park through River City Construction: a low structure with a ramp, sensory and gear panels, a short slide, stepping pods and a trio of tall yellow sculptural flowers that double as shade and landmark.

The details that mattered on a hospital site included a unitary rubber surface, drainage worked out through the project's RFI process, and close-out documentation for the facilities team. This project offers a reference for healthcare play spaces in Kansas and Missouri.
