Questions we get from superintendents, parks directors and architects

How much does a school playground cost in Kansas or Missouri?

Every site is different. Equipment, surfacing, shade, site preparation and installation all affect the scope. Contact ATHCO for a project-specific estimate before setting a bond or grant figure.

How much does a splash pad cost?

Size, water systems, spray features, site preparation and supporting facilities all affect the scope. Contact ATHCO to discuss your site and get a project-specific estimate.

How do we buy through Greenbush?

Kansas and Missouri public entities can purchase ATHCO equipment and installation directly through ATHCO's Greenbush contract, since all of our products and services have been pre-bid through Greenbush's RFP process. You issue a purchase order referencing the contract. See our Greenbush page.

What is the lead time?

Landscape Structures and Aquatix: 8 to 12 weeks from order to delivery, longer for custom towers. Porter Athletic gym equipment: submittals take 6 to 8 weeks, then 10 to 14 weeks to ship. Plan a spring order for a summer playground install, and order gym equipment as soon as the structural steel drawings are approved.

Who installs the equipment?

ATHCO manages installation with certified installers we have worked with for years, under our project manager and construction manager (both CPSI certified). On bonded new-construction jobs we work as a subcontractor to the general contractor; on park and district jobs we contract directly with you.

Do you do inspections and repairs?

Yes. We provide CPSI playground audits, annual inspections, gym equipment inspections (backstops, divider curtains, scoreboards) and equipment repairs. Contact us to confirm service options for your equipment and manufacturer.

What surfacing should we choose?

Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF), synthetic turf and poured-in-place rubber have different costs, maintenance needs and accessibility considerations. Selection depends on your site, design and maintenance plan. ATHCO can help compare options.

What does an inclusive playground mean?

A playground where children of all abilities can play together, not a separate accessible corner. That means an accessible route to elevated play, ground-level sensory and social play, transfer points, ramps when needed, and unitary surfacing. We design to the Landscape Structures inclusive play guidelines and can help with grant applications.

What is included in a new-gym equipment package?

Basketball backstops and equipment control, ceiling-suspended volleyball systems, sleeved volleyball with floor sleeves, wall padding, divider curtains, batting cages, perimeter netting, and PE-stamped submittals with point loads for the structural engineer. ATHCO supplies, installs, and trains your staff. More importantly, we're local to better assist in service years after the install is complete.

What is the warranty?

Warranty coverage varies by manufacturer, product and component. Ask ATHCO for the current written terms and available service options for the equipment in your proposal.

Do you work with landscape architects and general contractors?

Yes. We provide CAD and 3D files, specifications, budget pricing and submittals, and offer free continuing-education (CEU) sessions. See our Landscape Architects page.

Where do you work?

All of Kansas and Missouri from our office in Lenexa, with sales representatives covering Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri. Recent projects include Derby, Junction City, Blue Springs, Overland Park, Stilwell and Oak Grove.

Do we need a mechanical building for a recirculating splash pad?

No separate site-built mechanical building is needed with Aquatix's MecH2O®. Its precast tank and factory-built enclosure arrive pre-plumbed, pre-wired and tested. ATHCO has installed it at Jerry Ivey Park, High Park and Derby Public Library. See our MecH2O® guide.
