Berry Bend: a campground playground for the Corps of Engineers

Landscape Structures playground at Berry Bend Campground, Truman Lake, Warsaw, Missouri
The project
The Corps of Engineers runs the campgrounds around Truman Lake, and Berry Bend's playground had reached the end of its life. ATHCO won the Corps' bid with a Landscape Structures design, then handled the parts a federal campground job adds: drainage and concrete curbing around the pit so wood fiber stays put on a sloping site, a pre-construction layout meeting because an extra climber was added to the design, and the paperwork a Corps project requires.
The result is a tower with twin slides and a climbing ring under the oaks, a few steps from the campsites, in the Corps' natural colors. It is a reference for state and federal park agencies in Kansas and Missouri, and for small park boards planning playgrounds in wooded sites.
